Christian Wolfrum appointed Full Professor

13 December 2016 - The ETH Board appointed Christian Wolfrum, currently Associate Professor at ETH Zurich, as Full Professor of Translational Nutrition Biology. Quote ETH News: "Christian Wolfrum is an internationally recognised expert on obesity. His research concentrates on identifying factors that promote the development of obesity and its complications, such as diabetes. Its main focus is on the interaction of lipids and their derivatives with cellular receptors and the ensuing modulation of transcriptional processes. Christian Wolfrum has already received numerous awards for his work on this nutritional and metabolic disorder, which causes huge problems throughout the world, both for the individuals concerned and in terms of its economic impact."

Laura Nyström appointed as Associate Professor of Food Biochemistry

10 October 2016 - At its meeting of 28/29 September 2016 the ETH Board has promoted Prof. Laura Nyström, currently Tenure Track Assistant Professor at ETH Zurich, to Associate Professor of Food Biochemistry. Quote ETH News: "Laura Nyström’s research focuses on dietary fibres and the associated phytochemicals in cereal grains and other plant components. Her research group investigates chemical and biochemical reactions which may destroy these health-promoting compounds in foodstuffs during processing and storage, evaluates different types of cereal and plants as raw materials, and looks for ways to improve the functionality of these food constituents. Laura Nyström has received a number of awards and grants for her research, including an ERC Starting Grant in 2015."

Two new Professors coming to D-HEST: Johannes Bohacek und Gerhard Schratt

10 October 2016 - At its meeting of 28/29 September 2016 the ETH Board appointed two new Professors to the Department of Health Sciences and Technology:

Dr. Johannes Bohacek, currently a Senior Assistant at the University of Zurich, as Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience. Quote ETH News: "Johannes Bohacek's research focuses on the neural consequences of acute and chronic stress. He is particularly interested in the connection between stress and neuropsychiatric disorders and the question of how stress influences germ cells epigenetically and can lead to long-term consequences for descendants. Through the appointment of Johannes Bohacek, ETH Zurich is strengthening the neurosciences in a targeted way and at the same time expanding into the field of stress research, with its relevance to medical applications."

Prof. Gerhard Schratt , currently Professor and Director of the Institute of Physiological Chemistry at Philipps-Universität Marburg, Germany, as Full Professor of Systems Neuroscience. Quote ETH News: "Gerhard Schratt’s internationally acclaimed research focuses on the molecular mechanisms that underlie the formation and environmentally-dependent alteration of neural circuits in the human brain. His special interest is in synapses, which play an important role in information storage. The appointment of Gerhard Schratt enables the Department of Health Sciences and Technology to strengthen the connections between the research areas of health, systems biology and neuroscience in an optimal way."

Denis Burdakov appointed Full Professor of Neuroscience

31 May 2016 - At its meeting of 25/26 May 2016 the ETH Board has appointed Prof. Denis Burdakov, currently Professor at King's College, London, as Full Professor of Neuroscience. Quote ETH News: "Denis Burdakov's research focuses on neural networks and processes that implement efficient and healthy interrelations between behaviour and the environment. He is particularly interested in how the brain processes information in order to control key behaviours – such as eating and sleeping – in an energy-efficient manner. His findings contribute to the treatment of diseases such as obesity and sleep disorders. The appointment of Denis Burdakov greatly enriches a number of different fields of research at ETH Zurich, as well as the collaboration with Zurich University Hospital."

Two New Professors at D-HEST: Karin Würtz und Collin Ewald

31 May 2016 - At its meeting of 25/26 May 2016 the ETH Board has appointed two D-HEST members as Professors. They will start their new positions on 1 June 2016:

Dr. Karin Würtz has been appointed as Assistant Professor of Immunoengineering and Regenerative Medicine. Quote ETH News: "Karin Würtz is a globally recognised expert in inflammatory processes in spinal discs and other tissues of the locomotor system. The main goal of her research is to control tissue inflammation using natural and synthetic substances so as to prevent degeneration and encourage regeneration of the organ. By appointing Karin Würtz, who holds an SNSF-funded professorship, ETH Zurich is further enhancing its globally respected research into regenerative medicine and the emerging field of immunoengineering."

Recording of inaugural lecture on 3 May 2017

Dr. Collin Ewald has been appointed as Assistant Professor of Extracellular Matrix Regeneration. Quote ETH News: "Collin Ewald is an internationally acclaimed researcher in the field of the molecular biology of ageing. Among other things, he has successfully shown that almost all life-extending interventions protect and repair not only the interior of the cell, but also, in an unexpected way, its exterior (the extracellular matrix). His appointment will significantly strengthen fundamental research at ETH Zurich into the important topic of our ageing society / ageing healthily. As an SNSF-funded professor, Collin Ewald's aim will be to find out what impact improving the regeneration of the extracellular matrix has on extending a healthy lifespan."

Shana Sturla appointed Full Professor

14 March 2016 - At its meeting of 9-10 March 2016, the ETH Board appointed Shana Sturla, currently Associate Professor at ETH Zurich, as Full Professor of Toxicology. Quote ETH News: "Shana Sturla conducts research on toxicology, working on acute and activated cytotoxicity of food and beverage ingredients as well as the synthesis of the reagents and test methods required for her work. Shana Sturla has made an important contribution to developing the Food Sciences curriculum and fulfils a central bridging function between the two research fields Food and Health. With her appointment as full professor, ETH Zurich retains an outstandingly successful teacher and researcher with a distinguished international reputation and an excellent network of contacts."
