Learning content for modern medical education.

Since 2018, medical studies in Switzerland have been regulated with a catalogue of learning objectives, the "Principal Relevant Objectives and Framework for Integrated Learning and Education in Switzerland" (externe SeitePROFILES). At all Swiss universities that offer medical studies, students must fulfil the PROFILES upon completion of their studies because the state examination is based on the PROFILES since 2021.

To ensure that the Bachelor of Medicine programme at ETH, which started in 2017, fulfils all PROFILES from the very beginning, curriculum mapping has been introduced. The online tool externe SeiteLOOOP (Learning Opportunities, Objectives and Outcomes Platform), which was developed by the Charité in Berlin, serves as a valued platform. Here, all learning objectives of courses are linked to the PROFILES catalogue (the mapping), amongst others.

LOOOP thus contains all modules of our Bachelor with the respective learning objectives. Each learning objective is linked with the different catalogues, especially with the PROFILES. Other important catalogues are the qualification profiles for the Bachelor of Human Medicine or the Medical Subject Headings (externe SeiteMeSH). LOOOP is continuously updated so that the learning objectives always match the actual contents of the lectures. Both lecturers and students can view the learning objectives in LOOOP.

The curriculum mapping is very important, especially for partner universities for the Master's degree, so that they know exactly what competences our students bring with them. Based on the data in LOOOP, the curriculum can constantly be analysied and, for example, make the development of competences visible over time. Furthermore, curriculum mapping helps to continuously optimise the curriculum and to rebuild entire modules. Furthermore, at ETH, we initiated the LOOOP Network Switzerland where we meet up regularly with other Swiss medical universities that use LOOOP. It is a group for exchange and further development of LOOOP as the head of the LOOOP Team at Charité (Olaf Ahlers) is also always present.

A learning objectives evaluation was carried out in the spring semester 2022. It was examined whether (I) the learning objectives are communicated in class or on the Moodle course and whether (II) the learning objectives from the curriculum mapping (LOOOP) correspond to the material taught in class.

The results show that across all semesters 87% of the learning objectives were communicated, with the 2nd semester performing best (99%) and the 6th semester (65%) still showing potential for improvement. The correspondence between the learning objectives and the material taught was already very good across all semesters, with values of 77% for complete correspondence and 13% for majority correspondence.
