2017

Awards for Master Students Food Science

At the Master celebration of the study programme Food Science held on 17 March 2017 the following prizes were awarded:

Willi-Studer-Prize: Ms. Alessia Delbrück, MSc ETH Food Sc.

ETH medal: Three outstanding master's theses were awarded with the ETH medal:

  • Ms. Alessia Delbrück, MSc ETH Food Sc. Thesis title: "Investigation of Lactobacillus plantarum antigungal activity and its potential increase by yeast-derived factors", carried out under the supervision of Prof. Leo Meile und Dr. Marc Stevens, Laboratory of Food Biotechnology.
  • Ms. Fabienne Kurt, MSc ETH Food Sc. Thesis title: "Culture of a defined intestinal microbial consortium using immobilization technology", carried out under the supervision of Prof. Christophe Lacroix and Dr. Dr. Tomas de Wouters,Laboratory of Food Biotechnology.
  • Ms. Sabrina Vitali, MSc ETH Food Sc. Thesis title: "Effect of Shade Cover and Variety on Volatile Compounds and Polyphenols in Cocoa", carried out under the supervision of Prof. Johan Six, Sustainable Agroecosystems (Department of Environmental Systems Science), and Prof. Laura Nyström, Laboratory of Food Biochemistry.

SGLWT-Prize: Mr. Kim Mishra, MSc ETH Food Sc, for his outstanding Master thesis entitled "Foamability of confectionery related fat systems – the impact of fat crystal network", supervised by Prof. Erich Windhab, Laboratory of Food Process Engineering, and Dr. Heiko Spitzbarth, Mibelle AG.

Hochdorf-Nutritec-Prize: Ms. Rebecca Näf, MSc ETH Food Sc, for her outstanding Master thesis entitled "Characterization of antifungal lactic acid bacteria and yeasts in a model system for cocoa bean fermentation in Honduras", supervised by Prof. Leo Meile and Dr. Susanne Miescher Schwenniger, ZHAW.

Bachelor Excellence Award

The award honours the best results of the first-year examinations in the study programme Health Sciences and Technology (HST) and in the study programme Food Science. Prize-winners of the first-year examinations 2016/2017 are:

  • HST: Ms. Andrea Catellani and Mr. Yann Tinguely
  • Food Science: Mr. Robert Spiess

Teaching award "Golden Owl" 2016

Winner of the Golden Owl 2016 at D-HEST is Dr. Roland Müller, lecturer and study coordinator of the study program Health Sciences anmd Technology. The Golden Owl was awarded on the occasion of the ETH Day on 19 November 2016.

At the Master celebration of the study programme Movement Sciences and Sport, held on 16 December 2016, the following prize was  awarded:

Awards for Master Students Health Sciences and Technology

At the Master celebration of the study programme Health Sciences and Technology, held on 16 December 2016, the following prizes were  awarded:

Willi-Studer-Prize:

  • Ms. Michaela Bürge, MSc ETH Health Sciences and Technology.
  • Ms. Luzia Douma, MSc ETH Health Sciences and Technology.

ETH medal: Two outstanding master's theses were awarded with the ETH medal:

  • Ms. Annick Ballmer, MSc ETH Health Sciences and Technology, for her outstanding Master thesis entitled:
    The Effect of Alpha Oscillations on Corticospinal Excitability", supervised by Prof. Nicole Wenderoth and Kathy Ruddy, Laboratory of Neural Control of Movement.
  • Mr. Josua Oderbolz, MSc ETH Health Sciences and Technology, for his outstanding Master thesis entitled:
    2-Oxazoline based polymeric micelles as drug delivery system for licofelone: New approach for local treatment of osteoarthritis",
    supervised by Prof. Marcy Zenobi-Wong and Mischa Müller, Laboratory of Cartilage Engineering and Regeneration.

Awards for Master Students Food Science

At the Master celebration of the study programme Food Science held on 18 March 2016 the following prizes were awarded:

Willi-Studer-Prize: Mr. Lukas Böni, MSc ETH in Food Science.

SGLWT-Prize: Mr. Michael Diener, MSc ETH in Food Science, for his outstanding Master thesis entitled "Elucidation of Rice Grain Structure from a Materials Science Perspective", supervised by Prof. Raffaele Mezzenga, Laboratory of Food and Soft Materials, and Dr. Nadina Müller-Fischer, Bühler AG.

Hochdorf-Nutritec-Prize: Ms. Corinne Bieri, MSc ETH in Food Science, for her outstanding Master thesis entitled "Mechanistic investigation of the antibacterial activity of reuterin proposed as biopreservative for minimally-processed produce", supervised by Prof. Christophe Lacroix and Dr. Christina Engels, Laboratory of Food Biotechnology.

Bachelor Excellence Award

The award honours the best results of the first-year examinations in the study programme Health Sciences and Technology (HST) and in the study programme Food Science. Prize-winners of the first-year examinations 2015/2016 are:

  • HST: Ms. Zoe Brack and Mr. Florian van Dellen
  • Food Science: Ms. Vera Christina Hug

Teaching Award "Golden Owl"

Winner of the Golden Owl 2015 at D-HEST is Dr. Urs Meyer, Physiology and Behaviour Laboratory. The Golden Owl was awarded on the occasion of the ETH Day on 21 November 2015.

Awards for Doctoral Students

The following doctoral theses have been awarded the ETH medal:

Dr. Lina Adriana Branco Aires. Her thesis entitled "Lamin A/C Associated Bidirectional Mechanotransduction Mechanisms" was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Viola Vogel.

Dr. Johannes Mansfeld. His thesis entitled "Regulation of health and lifespan by activation of energy and nutrient sensors in the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans" was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Michael Ristow.

Dr. Ivan Usov. His thesis entitled "Quantitative analysis, chirality and mechanical properties of natural fibrillar nanostructures" was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Raffaele Mezzenga.

At the Master celebration of the study programme Movement Sciences and Sport, held on 4 December 2015, the following prize was  awarded:

Willi-Studer-Prize: Ms. Daniela Paganini, MSc ETH Movement Sciences and Sport.

Awards for Master Students Food Science

At the Master celebration of the study programme Food Science held on 20 March 2015 the following prizes were awarded:

Willi-Studer-Prize: Ms. Carla Rudigier, MSc ETH Food Science.

ETH medal: Ms. Julia Werder, MSc ETH Food Science, for her outstanding Master thesis entitled "Antimicrobial activity of tow Bifidobacterium strains with high iron sequestration mechanisms", supervised by Prof. Christophe Lacroix and Dr. Christophe Chassard, Laboratory of Food Biotechnology.

SGLWT-Prize: Ms. Stephanie Spoerry Serrano, MSc ETH Food Science, for his outstanding Master thesis entitled "Grosstechnische Inhibierung der enzymatischen Bräunung in Frischteigen", supervised by Prof. Erich J. Windhab, Laboratory of Food Process Engineering, and Dr. Christian Städeli, Jowa AG.

Hochdorf-Nutritec-Prize: Ms. Elena Guyer, MSc ETH Food Science, for her outstanding Master thesis entitled "Nanoscaled iron compounds intended for food fortification do not induce intracellular reactive oxygen species or oxidative DNA damage formation in human colon cell lines" supervised by Prof. Shana Sturla and Dr. Ioannis Trantakis, Laboratory of Food and Nutrition Toxcology.

Bachelor Excellence Award

The award honours the best results of the first-year examinations in the study programme Health Sciences and Technology (HST) and in the study programme Food Science. Prize-winners of the first-year examinations 2014/2015 are:

  • HST: Ms. Nina Maria Derron and Mr. Cla Duri Linus Tschannen

Teaching Award "Golden Owl"

Winner of the Golden Owl 2014 at D-HEST is Prof. Dr. Nicole Wenderoth, Neural Control of Movement Lab.

Awards for Doctoral Students

The following doctoral theses have been awarded the ETH medal:

Dr. Alexandra Dostal. Her thesis entitled "In vitro and in vivo systematic study of the complex effects of iron on composition and metabolic activity of the human gut microbiota" was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Christophe Lacroix.

Dr. Gion Fessel. His thesis entitled "Mechanics of collagen cross-links in tendon aging, disease and as potential treatment for injuries" was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Jess Snedeker.

Dr. Cécile Lara. Her thesis entitled "Amyloid fibrils from food globular protein to complex self-assembly" was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Raffaele Mezzenga.

At the Master celebration of the study programme Movement Sciences and Sport, held on 5 December 2014, the following prize was  awarded:

Awards for Master Students Food Science

At the Master celebration of the study programme Food Science held on 21 March 2014 the following prizes were awarded:

Willi-Studer-Prize: Ms. Christine Sieber, MSc ETH Food Science.

ETH medal: Ms. Fabienne Meier, MSc ETH Food Science, for her outstanding Master thesis entitled "Microbial safety of "Fior die Latte" Mozzarella cheese produced with novel process parameters", supervised by Prof. Christophe Lacroix and Prof. Leo Meile, Laboratory of Food Biotechnology.

SGLWT-Prize: Mr. Pascal Guillet, MSc ETH Food Science, for his outstanding Master thesis entitled "Enhancing of stearin fractionation by controlled seed crystallization", supervised by Prof. Erich J. Windhab and Dr. Abdul Jeelani Shaik, Laboratory of Food Process Engineering.

Hochdorf-Nutritec-Prize: Ms. Lea Bircher, MSc ETH Food Science, for her outstanding Master thesis entitled "Impact of iron on the metabolic activity of gut bacteria – an in vitro study" supervised by Prof. Christophe Lacroix and Dr. Christophe Chassard, Laboratory of Food Biotechnology.

The award honours the best results of the first-year examinations in the study programme Health Sciences and Technology (HST) and in the study programme Food Science. Prize-winners of the first-year examinations 2013/2014 are:

Awards for Doctoral Students

The following doctoral theses have been awarded the ETH medal:

Dr. Matthias Rosenwald. His thesis entitled "Structurally altered nucleosides: chemical tools for recognizing modified DNA and elucidating mechanisms of DNA polymerases" was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Christian Wolfrum.

Dr. Hailey Gahlon. Her thesis entitled "Structurally altered nucleosides: chemical tools for recognizing modified DNA and elucidating mechanisms of DNA polymerases" was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Shana Sturla.

Dr. David Christen. His thesis entitled "Nonlinear failure prediction in human bone - a clinical approach based on high resolution imaging" was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Ralph Müller.

At the Master celebration 2013 of the study programme Movement Sciences and Sport the following prize was  awarded:

Willi-Studer-Prize: Mr. Dominik Bohli, MSc ETH Movement Sciences and Sport.

Awards for Master Students Food Science

At the Master celebration of the study programme Food Science held on 22 March 2013 the following prizes were awarded:

Willi-Studer-Prize: Mr. Silvan Göldi, MSc ETH Food Science.

SGLWT-Prize: Mr. Christoph Brunschwiler, MSc ETH Food Science, for his outstanding Master Thesis entitled "Rice Bran Lipase: Method Development for Direct Activity Measurement and Determination of Inactivation Kinetics", supervised by Prof. Laura Nyström, Laboratory for Food Biochemistry and Dr. Daniel Heine, Bühler AG.

Hochdorf-Nutritec-Prize: Ms. Laurence Curty, MSc ETH Food Science, for her outstanding Master Thesis entitled "Effects of early nutrition on dietary intake, appetite characteristics, growth and body composition in infancy", supervised by Prof. Richard Hurrell und Dr. Maria Andersson, Laboratory of Human Nutrition.

Bachelor Excellence Award

In February 2013 the first Bachelor Excellence Award was presented. The award honours the two best results of the first-year examinations in the study programme Health Sciences and Technology (HST) and the best result in the study programme Food Science. Prize-winners of the first-year examinations 2012/2013 are:

  • HST: Mr. Martin Bucher and Mr. Sascha Saba
  • Food Science: Ms. Frederike Margareth Gossner

2012

Golden Owl

Winner of the Golden Owl 2012 at D-HEST: Prof. Dr. Urs Boutellier (emeritus since March 2013), Institute of Movement Sciences and Sport. Prof. Boutellier was also awarded the Credit Suisse Award for Best Teaching (more information abot the award, in German).

ETH Medal for Fritz Eichenseher

The doctoral thesis by Fritz Eichenseher has been awarded the ETH medal. The thesis "Engineering of Bacteriophage Endolysins for the Control and Detection of Bacterial Pathogens" was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Martin Loessner.

Awards for Master Students Movement Sciences and Sport

At the Master celebration 2012 of the study programme Movement Sciences and Sport the following prize was  awarded:

Willi-Studer-Prize: Ms. Ursina Tresch, MSc ETH Movement Sciences and Sport.

Awards for Master Students Food Science

At the Master celebration of the study programme Food Science held on 23 March 2012 the following prizes were awarded:

Willi-Studer-Prize: Ms. Stefanie Keller, MSc ETH Food Science

Hochdorf-Nutritec-Prize: Ms. Liselotte Wallquist, MSc ETH Food Science, for her outstanding Master Thesis entitled "Set-up of an in vitro colonic fermentation model for Clostridium difficile infection in the elderly", supervised by Prof. Christophe Lacroix and Dr. Martina Haug, Laboratory for Food Biotechnology
